These reviews won't always be of the newest movies-Just the latest ones we've seen.
Shadow of the Vampire-This movie is a FREAK-fest of major proportions! Starring:Willem Dafoe, John Malkovich, Eddie Izzard, Cary Elwes, Ronan Vibert,Aden Gillett,Udo Kier, Catherine McCormack Plot:The movie revolves around the making of the black and white vampire film called Nosferatu, considered one of the greatest vampire movies of all times. Noted for its realism, this film is still loved by all true vampire officienados. The premise of the movie is that the German director(F.W. Murnau) of the movie didn't hire an actor to play Count Orlock(the Nosferatu), but instead hired a REAL vampire! Soon the cast are dropping like flies, the director's losing his marbles, and the vampire is running amock. Willem Dafoe is marvellous as Count Orlock, John Malkovich is splendidly creepy as the insane director, and Eddie Izzard and Ronan Vibert are good in small parts. Look out for Cary Elwes as the strange, pistol packing cameraman. Best Moment-Count Orloff gets drunk, then runs around the set of a boat killing off extras. Film Rating:I give this film four FREAKS out of five. Darkly funny, strange, and atmospheric, it's a perfect FREAK-show.
The Man Who Wasn't There:The only shock-how dull it was.
Starring:Billy BobThornton,FrancesMcDormand,Micheal Badalucco,Richard Jenkins,Scarlett Johansson,Jon Polito, Tony Shalhoub,James Gandalfini
Plot:This film, the latest from the Coen brothers, is a 40's film noir-ish piece about a barber in Santa Rosa, California. The guy is so bored with his life, that he decides to blackmail the man his wife is having an affair with. He ends up offing his wife's lover when the man figures out who's been blackmailing him and attacks him. His wife gets accused of the murder-and the film drags on-and on. I love the Coen brothers films usually-they're twisted, insane, FREAK-ish, maniacal. Everything, that is, but dull. This film is so slow and boring that I was hard pressed to believe that they made it.By the end of the film, when the barber goes to the electric chair, you're almost glad and relieved to see him go.
Best Moment:A young girl the barber had befriended tries to give him a thank-you blow job while he's driving. He wasn't expecting it, so there is an immediate car crash.
Film Rating:I have to give this one two FREAKS out of five-it is stylishly made, just very dull.
From Hell-made by the Hughes brothers! This is a mvie about a true Menace II Society starring:Johhny Depp, Heather Graham, Robbie Coltrane, Ian Holm
Plot:Inspector Abberline(Johnny Depp), is an opium addict who has visions of crimes. He is drawn into the Jack the Ripper case, discovering a shocking secret behind the killing and mutilation of East End London whores. This film has a nice FREAKY air to it, but, then, what Johnny Depp movie isn't? This film would have been very good, except for Heather Graham's lack of acting skills, hideous kool-aid dyed hair, and wavering London accent.
Film Rating: Four FREAKS out of five, for an inventive plotline and atmospheric production.
Vampire Hunter D-Bloodlust(Anime)
Plot:Continues the story begun in Vampire Hunter D. It's the future, and vampires rule the world. But vampire hunters are taking a great toll, especially the dampeel(half vampire/half human)known only as D. This anime is ten times better than the original, which was quite interesting. The animation is exquisite, the storyline heartbreaking, and the men gorgeous. The English translation is one of the best I've come across.
Rating:Five FREAKS out of five, for one of the best Anime I've encounter to date.
